Extreme tunability in aluminum doped Zinc Oxide plasmonic materials for near-infrared applications

چکیده
Plasmonic materials (PMs), featuring large static or dynamic tunability, have significant impact on the optical properties due to their potential for applications in transformation optics, telecommunications, energy, and biomedical areas. Among PMs, the carrier concentration and mobility are two tunable parameters, which control the plasma frequency of a metal. Here, we report on large static and dynamic tunability in wavelengths up to 640 nm in Al-doped ZnO based transparent conducting degenerate semiconductors by controlling both thickness and applied voltages. This extreme tunability is ascribed to an increase in carrier concentration with increasing thickness as well as voltage-induced thermal effects that eventually diminish the carrier concentration and mobility due to complex chemical transformations in the multilayer growth process. These observations could pave the way for optical manipulation of this class of materials for potential transformative applications.

Conventional plasmonic materials, namely noble metals, hamper the realization of practical plasmonic devices due to their intrinsic limitations, such as lack of capabilities to tune in real-time their optical properties, failure to assimilate with CMOS-standards, and severe degradation at elevated temperatures. Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) is a promising alternative as plasmonic materia...

Noble metals such as gold and silver are conventionally used as the primary plasmonic building blocks of optical metamaterials. Making subwavelength-scale structural elements from these metals not only seriously limits the optical performance of a device due to high absorption, it also substantially complicates the manufacturing process of nearly all metamaterial devices in the optical waveleng...
متن کاملNear Infrared Plasmonic Gas Sensing with Doped Metal Oxide Nanocrystals
In this paper, we demonstrate the application of ZnO doped with gallium (GZO), aluminum (AZO) and germanium (GeZO) nanocrystals as novel plasmonic and chemiresistive sensors for the detection of hazardous gases including hydrogen (H2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). GZO, AZO and GeZO nanocrystals are obtained by non-aqueous colloidal heat-up synthesis with high transparency in the visible range and...
متن کاملDirect observation of narrow mid-infrared plasmon linewidths of single metal oxide nanocrystals
Infrared-responsive doped metal oxide nanocrystals are an emerging class of plasmonic materials whose localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) can be resonant with molecular vibrations. This presents a distinctive opportunity to manipulate light-matter interactions to redirect chemical or spectroscopic outcomes through the strong local electric fields they generate. Here we report a techniqu...
